George Nakashima [1905-1990] was a Japanese American architect that turned his talent toward the natural beauty of wood, pioneering the style known

as “live-edge furniture”. Nakashima had a great reverence for trees and the wood treasure that they embody. He often chose the wood slabs that were cracked and had faults rather than the more perfect ones to create his masterpieces of furniture. “Father of the American Craft Movement” is a title that he has been given and is well-deserved.

Wendell Castle [1932-2018] is known as the Father of the Art Furniture Movement. In his long career he developed many furniture styles and took many directions. He was a risk taker, pushing the the notion of furniture as utilitarian into the realm of gallery art. Unlike Nakashima, Castle was primarily a sculptor and more interested in form than in the beauty of wood grain and it’s natural edges. The sculpted details in his furniture of the 80’s with it’s “tromp l’oeil” (a French term for “deceiving the eye”) featured finely carved items and serves as an inspiration for me. My “bar towel” is an example of that.
